Third Light sites are most effective and look be=
st when hosted under your own domain name. For example, instead of http://yoursitename.thirdlight.com
you could have =
http://media.yourdomain.com
.
If you control your own domain name, by making adjustments to your DNS r= ecords, you could add a new entry that refers to your IMS site.
IMS can be run under any domain name. To do this, the DNS records for th= e chosen domain=E2=80=99s records need to be CNAMEs of yoursitename= .thirdlight.com.
A CNAME record is a pointer, which allows you to direct requests for you= r site to our servers. For example, in BIND (notice the trailing dots are r= equired):
media.y= ourdomain.com. =09IN=09CNAME yoursitename.thirdlight.com.
Many internet service providers and domain registrars offer a control pa= nel to help domain owners add or adjust records for their web site. These s= ervices vary considerably, and you may wish to ask for specific help from t= he company where you registered your domain or from your IT department.
Please note that an 'HTTP redirect' is not a suitable alternative to adj= usting DNS records.
Also note that changes you make to your DNS records may take a while to = propagate across the Internet.
Online tools (not provided by Third Light) exist to allow you to check y= our DNS records:
e.g http://mxtoolbox.com/CnameLookup.aspx
Entering media.mydomain.com into the form should then show that th=
ere is an association between media.mydomain.com and you=
rsite.thirdlight.com if you have set it up correctly.
At this point you should also be able to access your IMS site on your ne= w domain.
If your site uses HTTPS or you would like it to do so going forward, you= r DNS records must point to the same address specified in the SSL certifica= te on your site. A mis-match may cause browsers to report a security warnin= g.
For sites hosted on Third Light's network, we can purchase a SSL certifi= cate on your behalf. Please carefully consider the domain name you wish to = use because SSL certificates cost money and if you change your mind we= may have to pass on the cost.
Step 4 - Choose the preferred domain
When your new address has been activated, your IMS site may potentially = respond on two different domain names - media.mydomain.com= and yoursite.thirdlight.com.
Set your preferred default by altering the settings on the Confi= guration > Site Options > Global Settings page.
