Trinity Hall is the fifth oldest college in the University of Cambridge, founded in the year 1350 and having nearly 10,000 members around the world.

To support all of its aims, the Development Office maintains a stock of high quality imagery for use in print or electronic communications when required. In 2006, Third Light was introduced to help centralise the image library, as the archive was becoming difficult to manage.
Jocelyn Poulton, Development Director of Trinity Hall, explains:
"Traditionally, we stored files on the College file server, or used prints and transparencies housed in our archives, or obtained CD-ROMs from our photographers, staff and alumni. However, as the age of digital cameras and the internet began, the stock of photographs available to us grew significantly, and we were struggling to keep track of all the new images and associated copyright details."
"We selected the Third Light IMS software as it provided a single system for all our needs - particularly the centralising of our photographic files. We are especially impressed by the ease with which we can now search for images quickly using simple keywords. We are also finding the interface for tracking image usage very helpful. Third Light's excellent team helped us get started; and they are always happy to offer support and advice."
The Trinity Hall image library is hosted by Third Light and is accessed via the high speed network in the College. Commercial storage and hosting, software updates, daily backups and technical support are all included in the Third Light package.
Jocelyn Poulton comments on the importance of the all-in-one service:
"A college of our age has a rich archive, replenished by each generation of students and staff. Recording our history and heritage is vital and the new image library has become a precious resource, allowing us not only to store photographic images, but also maintain a photographic record of our collections. The IMS software is really easy to use, belying the powerful software, reliable storage offered and technical ability of the Third Light team."
"We continue to discover more time-saving benefits of the Third Light system, and surprise ourselves by finding more opportunities to make use of the software."
The college plans to open online galleries for alumni to browse photos and buy prints or gift items online, adding a revenue stream to the service and further expanding the site for the college and its members. You can view more details on the IMS Appliance or contact us for a demonstration.

Scion Research (New Zealand)
Scion is a Crown Research Institute, based in Rotorua. Scion is dedicated to improving the international competitiveness of New Zealand's forest industries and building a stronger biobased economy for New Zealand. Scion's vision is to advance the widespread utilisation of renewable materials and products derived from plants for economic, environmental, cultural and social returns.

Show more details - Scion...
Scion uses a Third Light IMS Appliance to store and manage New Zealand's largest forestry-related image collection, including an extensive stock of digital and analogue media. These files need to be searched and retrieved by marketing, communications and scientific staff at short notice from any of the four offices, with a total of approximately 350 staff accessing the system.
Bringing these assets together in an electronic image library has allowed Scion to save time and gain additional benefit from its ongoing investment in images. The enhancements provided by Third Light have extended the image library to be a powerful digital hub, particularly through the highly configurable metadata support - essential for correctly indexing scientific material - and the overall convenience afforded by the intuitive user interface. Files in a wide range of different formats, including scans from slides, can be easily downloaded in the desired format with no specialist tools and only a standard web browser to access the site.
These benefits have made IMS a valuable day-to-day tool for the organisation, as Gerard Rooijakkers explains:
"Scion's images and videos of forestry and biomaterials research were strewn over multiple repositories. Since the implementation of Third Light's IMS we are creating a central repository of all digital images and videos and are retrospectively digitising our hardcopy photographs and slides as part of our image preservation plan."
"Our scientists are impressed and enthusiastic users of the Third Light IMS library, thanks to its simple and intuitive format. The next step will be building an e-business portal so customers are able to access and purchase images."

"Third Light IMS has significantly improved the way we manage our digital media. The software has proved to be flexible and robust, and has transformed the way we use these valuable files. We are especially pleased with the upload and download tools as they fit very well with our existing workflow, greatly enhancing our productivity without requiring us to learn new ways of working."

Rod Ingersent, General Manager of Scudamore's explains how the business has harnessed the power of the web and digital marketing:
"At the heart of our operations is a fully digital business using cutting edge technology to market and promote our services to visitors from around the world. With an iconic location set in some of England's most beautiful and traditional architecture, we rely on photographs and videos to convey a sense of the unique experience that awaits our overseas visitors when they arrive. Over the years we have accumulated a very large media library."
Using Third Light has solved a critical problem that Scudamore's experienced before using Third Light IMS. Ingersent continues:
"
The challenge we faced before we had Third Light IMS was how to find appropriate pictures and transfer them to printers, magazines, web sites and tourism agencies. This process was laborious at each step, and we were finding that many of the files we wanted to use were in the wrong technical format or too high a resolution to use, which was costing us time and overloading our mail server."
By solving these problems, Third Light IMS has become a key part of Scudamore's marketing efforts, and provides the central store for all of these important files.
"Now that we have Third Light IMS to manage our archive, we simply ensure that everything is uploaded to the digital library as soon as it is captured. We can then search at any time to find appropriate photos or videos based on keywords, time of year, location and other criteria. We send files directly to our suppliers at the right size and in the right format using Third Light's special 'publishing' feature - this way, what used to take all day is now just a few clicks. Best of all, when we publish files from IMS or send lightboxes to designers, we can continue to track these assets from the reporting tools in IMS."
"In the few years since it was first installed, our IMS system has become indispensable. It is easily coping with the very large volume of files that we are accumulating, and provides a fast and truly easy way to find and share files in the right format.
"It is one of the most useful tools in our business, and great value for money too. Without it, we would need a full-time staff member to perform the same work."

Royal National Lifeboat Institute
Portrush Lifeboat Station launched their website early in 2004, primarily as a resource for local fund-raising and to raise local awareness of the station's day-to-day activities. As well as streamlining the availability of images to press and public, the RNLI harnessed IMS's e-Commerce facility to generate much-needed funds to support its day to day operation.

"The RNLI plays a vital role in the life of many seaside villages, and there is always a lot of public interest in the powerful and evocative images of the volunteer lifeboat crews around the coast responding to emergencies at sea.
"Third Light's software allows us to easily manage our photograph library, selectively publishing pictures for the visitors to our website. As well as public access, IMS gives us the control to provide selected high-quality images on demand to the media for newspaper and magazine coverage of publicity events. We received several requests for printed copies of images, and realised that selling prints was an obvious way of raising a bit of extra money for our Crew Training Appeal. With IMS's PhotoBox integration we can not only sell prints, but also t-shirts, mugs and greeting cards - instantly available when we upload our pictures and without us having to charge, post or print anything ourselves. As a non-profit organisation, all the profits from these sales go to helping the Portrush crew save lives at sea."
