Dear all, Welcome to the September 2005 newsletter. We are very pleased to have received so much positive feedback since IMS v4.0 was released, and appreciate your helpful comments on the new interface. If you have not yet upgraded to IMS v4.0, it is not too late - details are included below. We have added a number of new services to IMS v4.0 since the first release in July, as follows. These changes are available immediately for all hosted IMS accounts. IMS Corporate Appliance customers receive updates during periodic updates - please contact support for further details of the schedule for your servers. Support for ICC Colour Profiles ------------------------------- There is a new checkbox on the Site Options page, labelled 'Enable support for colour profiles' (IMS Premium and Corporate Appliance only). If you upload images which contain colour profiles (ICC profiles), enable this feature. IMS will automatically adjust your thumbnails and previews to use the standard ‘internet’ colour space, which is sRGB. In addition IMS can correct the colours in your images to suit the printing services used by Third Light. The original file you upload will not be altered, and any lightbox downloads or other digital copies will use your original ICC profiled image file. Colour management is the process of matching the colour information in an image to the colour capabilities of an output device (like your monitor or printer, and the printing systems used with IMS’s commercial printing option). Files using colour management have an ICC profile embedded in them. Almost all web browsers ignore ICC profiles, resulting in distorted colours when such files are used on the internet. This is why IMS now includes this extra feature. If you do not use ICC profiles with your images, leave this option off to avoid a small performance penalty during uploads when using this feature. CSV Exports of User Data ------------------------ There is now a button on the Manage Users page to allow you to export usernames and email addresses from IMS to a CSV (Comma Separated Values) file. This is a format suitable for use with Excel, FileMaker or other CSV-compatible tools. This feature is designed to help you with marketing activities if you have a large user base. Please note that you should always obtain consent before sending commercial emails through an SMTP relay, to avoid the mail being classified as unsolicited, which may result in complaints and disruption to your service. Multiple Permissions Editor --------------------------- IMS 4.0 can now edit permissions for more than one user at a time. Next to the 'All Checked Users' option, there is a folder (permissions) icon which will activate a new interface that assigns folders to all of the users you have checked. To save time, you can also use the ‘Grant All’ and ‘Revoke All’ buttons when you are editing permissions, or the ‘Leave All’ button to clear your selections and start again. Full details are included in the IMS manual in section 9.3. There is a similar interface for Events, which is described in section 10.2. Performance Improvements ------------------------ Based on your feedback we have made a number of adjustments to the way the Manage Albums and Manage Users pages are generated by the IMS software. This should result in these pages loading much more quickly (approximately half the time). We will continue to review pages with longer load times. Improved JPEG2000 support ------------------------- The IMS core graphics libraries have been upgraded, and now include extended support for JPEG2000. We have also determined that the standard Adobe CS plugins for JPEG2000 produce non-standard image files, which are not compatible with IMS. If you want to use JPEG2000 we recommend trying the Lead J2K plugin, which is available from this web site: http://www.leadtools.com/utilities/psplugin/PhotoShop_plug-in.htm. Upgrading to IMS v4.0 --------------------- If you have not yet upgraded to IMS v4.0, please have a look at the July newsletter which explains what the new features are, and how to request an upgrade from IMS v3.3. The newsletter is a available as a PDF here: http://www.thirdlight.com/news/v4_newsletter.pdf. Feedback -------- Every feature of IMS is based on your ideas and feedback. We keep a thorough record of all feedback and aim to implement the features that are most requested as part of our development plans.
